Tasting experience: Strawberry, Mango, Oolong
Country: Kenya
Continent: Africa
Farm/Lot: Mara Coffee Estate
Roast: Light (City)
Process: Natural Anaerobic
Varietal: SL 28, Ruiru 11, Batian
From Red Fox:
This coffee is unique, both in that it has been processed utilizing a more extended fermentation technique (a rarity for Kenya given the majority of coffees are washed) and also due to the fact that it is from the "fly" or secondary crop. Traditionally, these fly crop cherries would be strip picked and processed as a commercial grade coffee. Two years ago, we partnered with the Mara Estate to experiment with careful harvest and processing protocols to see if more value could be realized. Thus far, the experiment has been successful - we look forward to continuing to partner with this estate and others to shape a more equitable future for Kenyan producers.
From our bags: Mara Estate doesn’t shout—it draws you in. Soft waves of strawberry and mango unfold slowly, with a gentle oolong tea finish that keeps the cup elegant and calm. Grown near Kenya’s Masai Mara Reserve and shaped by natural anaerobic fermentation, this coffee is expressive without being overbearing.
An extremely clean example of anaerobic processing, the cup has good mouthfeel, great sweetness and is a coffee we find ourselves returning to again and again.
Brewed gently, it finds its balance: fruity, silky, and quietly complex. Give it a moment, slow your sip, and wait for the cup to open up.
